Political rivals set aside differences during a solemn requiem mass at Friends Church, Ngong Road, for veteran diplomat Mzee Burudi Nabwera. The rare gathering brought together Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

In a rare display of political unity, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna joined National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Wednesday for the requiem mass of former Cabinet Minister and veteran diplomat Mzee Burudi Nabwera. The service was held at Friends Church along Ngong Road, Nairobi. Senator Sifuna shared photos of the event on social media, reflecting the solemn nature of the gathering as leaders paid tribute to Nabwera’s distinguished career in diplomacy, parliament, and public administration.
Mzee Burudi Nabwera, who passed away on October 8, 2026, held several pivotal public service roles throughout his lifetime. He served as Kenya's inaugural ambassador to the United States and was the nation's first permanent representative to the United Nations. Additionally, Nabwera served as Minister of State in the Office of the President and was elected as the first Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency when it was established in 1988. His death has drawn tributes from leaders across the political spectrum and members of the public alike.
The memorial service marks the beginning of farewell ceremonies planned by the family. A second requiem service is scheduled for Friday, October 23, at Friends Church in Kiminini, ahead of the final burial ceremony on Saturday, October 24, at his home in Mlimani, Lugari, Kakamega County.
The joint attendance of Sifuna, Wetang'ula, and Mudavadi arrives amidst heightened political dialogue leading up to the 2027 General Election. Although these leaders have recently voiced differing perspectives on political alliances and presidential campaign strategies, their interaction at Friends Church remained strictly focused on honoring the legacy and public contributions of the late veteran diplomat.
