Salary Negotiation Basics for Job Seekers
Many people accept the first offer because negotiating feels uncomfortable. A calm, prepared conversation can make a real difference.
Do your research first
Look at pay for similar roles in your county and industry, using job adverts, salary surveys and people you trust. Decide the lowest offer you would accept and the figure you would be happy with.
When asked for your expectation
Give a range based on your research, and say it depends on the full package and responsibilities. Avoid stating your current pay unless it helps you.
Look at the whole offer
- Basic pay, allowances and any bonus
- Medical cover, leave days and pension
- Contract length, probation period and notice terms
Get it in writing
Ask for the offer letter and read it carefully before you resign from your current job. If something differs from what you discussed, raise it politely.
